Medical Terminology

A course designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, students identify proper use of words in a medical environment. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student’s ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

Course Description:

A course designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, students identify proper use of words in a medical environment. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student’s ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care.

UNITS OF STUDY

UNIT I INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

A. The student is expected to:

1. identify abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols; identify the basic structure of medical words; practice word-building skills; research the origins of eponyms; use directional terms and anatomical planes related to body structure; accurately spell and define occupationally specific terms relating to body systems, surgical and diagnostic procedures, diseases, and treatments (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F)
2. correctly pronounce medical terms (2B)
3. use medical and dental dictionaries and multimedia resources (3A)

B. Activities

1. Prefixes
2. Suffixes
3. Medical Abbreviations
4. research and report the historical development of medical language (including Greek and Latin terms, eponyms, and modern terminology)
5. construct flash cards of basic prefixes, suffixes, and roots
6. practice orally with a partner pronunciation of medical terminology (sounds like)
7. create new terms using word parts
8. research and report on career opportunities in informational systems

UNIT II STRUCTURE OF THE HUMAN BODY

A. The student is expected to:

1. identify abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols; identify the basic structure of medical words; practice word-building skills; use directional terms and anatomical planes related to body structure; accurately spell and define occupationally specific terms relating to body systems, surgical and diagnostic procedures, diseases, and treatments (1A, 1B, 1C, 1E, 1F)
2. use appropriate verbal and written strategies to meet the demands of the speaker, audience, purpose, and occasion; correctly pronounce medical terms; employ increasingly precise language to communicate (2A, 2B, 2C)
3. use medical and dental dictionaries and multimedia resources (3A)

B. Activities

1. write and present a short story utilizing directional terms, body planes, etc.
2. conduct a scavenger hunt utilizing anatomical terms to direct the students in their search for clues
3. label models or diagrams with the correct terminology


UNIT III INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

A. The student is expected to:

1. identify abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols; practice word-building skills; accurately spell and define occupationally specific terms relating to body systems, surgical and diagnostic procedures, diseases, and treatments (1A, 1C, 1F)
2. use appropriate verbal and written strategies to meet the demands of the speaker, audience, purpose, and occasion; correctly pronounce medical terms; employ increasingly precise language to communicate; evaluate the use of verbal and written language in a variety of health care scenarios; read and interpret technical material related to health care (2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E)
3. use medical and dental dictionaries and multimedia resources; use resources to interpret technical materials; utilize electronic media such as the Internet and other telecommunications, with appropriate supervision (3A,3B, 3C)
4. accurately interpret, transcribe, and communicate vocabulary related to health care; translate medical terms to conversational language to facilitate communication (4A, 4B)
