Biotechnology/Nanotechnology is in reality two different fields each dealing with a broad range of topics. In a broad sense, nanotechnology deals with the control of matter on a scale of less than one micrometer. It includes fields such as chemistry, physics and molecular science. We often think of Nanotechnology in terms of very small, even microscopic electronics. Biological technology deals with technology based on biology. This field is active in agriculture, food science and medicine. In addition, we often think of biotechnology relating to the study and research of DNA. Although farmers have practiced crossbreeding of plants and animals for thousands of years, this new area considers taking virtually any gene and including it into any organism to produce certain characteristics. These characteristics may result in plants growing larger, animals being more adaptable to harsh weather, etc. The one thing nanotechnology and biotechnology have in common is they both deal with very small or microscopic matter. |
